Principal’s Message

Tena Koutou Katoa    Talofa Lava     Kamusta    Malo e lelei    Mauri     Malo ni     Faka talofa atu    Namaste   Greetings to all

Welcome back to school for Term 4.

By now you would have received your child’s team’s panui and the Term 4 Key Dates, so it will be of no surprise to you that we have a very busy term ahead; particularly as this is our final term as a Year 1-8 full primary school. At the end of this term not only do we say goodbye to our Year 7&8 intermediate students but our current Year 6 students will be leaving also. So there are several farewell events planned for the end of this year.

St Joseph’s School has supported our Year 6-8 whanau to ensure that their children are enrolled in their next school for 2024. We understand that the applications for enrolment of our current Year 5 students for 2025 at St Ignatius College are already flying in. Preference students attending St Joseph’s School do have priority for attending St Ignatius College but enrolments must be in on time; which we have been told is 24 February 2024. We are making ourselves available to support whanau to enrol their children for Year 7 2025 today from 1:00 – 6:00 pm. This information was sent out in Week 1. You do need a new preference form signed by Father. I hope you find this opportunity helpful.

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. October is the month in which Mary appeared for the last time to the shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal urging them to “say the rosary every day to obtain peace for the world”. I visited Fatima while on sabbatical in Term 2. At school, our children will be saying the rosary each day and taking turns to pray the rosary in our prayer area with the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes who also holds her rosary beads. I encourage you to say the rosary in your homes so our children can experience it with you as a family. The intention for peace in the world is especially relevant today.

Today we received, in the post, a very special blessing from the RNDM Mission Sisters Congregational Leadership Team in Rome. It is to acknowledge the 100th Foundation Anniversary (Centennial) of our school. We will have this framed and display it in our administration block.

Last Friday, both our Ako 1 and Ako 2 students had the opportunity to go on trips. Ako 1 went into Manuakau to watch a live theatre performance by the Tim Bray Theatre Company of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’ at the Due Drop Events Centre. This was a book that Mr Surrey read to the students in Term 1. The teachers applied for these free tickets and funding towards the cost of our buses through the “Gift a Seat” programme. Meanwhile, Ako 2 travelled to Auckland Zoo as part of their concept study with a focus on Protecting Aotearoa. This trip was funded through the MOE Donation Scheme. Both are wonderful opportunities for our children to experience and learn from.

A special welcome to Mrs Samantha Tino to our staff. Mrs Tino replaces Mr Muller in Arahi and we are delighted to have her with us. Congratulations to Ms Claudia Farrell who is to be married this weekend and Mrs Suit-Keen Waru who will be confirmed into our Catholic faith on Sunday. Two beautiful occasions for us to rejoice. I hope you and your whanau enjoy your Labour Weekend together and come safely back to school next Tuesday.

Wishing you and your whanau many spring blessings.

Mission Day – Friday 17 November

What you need to know

This is an annual event run by the Year 7 & 8 students to raise money to support the RNDM Mission Sisters’ missionary work. It is similar to a gala day, with a variety of stalls and raffles. Tokens will be for sale before and after school, outside the office, from Monday 13 November, for students to use on Mission Day. 1 token = $0.50

All Parents and whānau are welcome to attend as well.

This event does require help from everyone.

How you can help

We will need a couple of year 7&8 parents to help us on the day. Please let your kaitiaki teacher know if you can help on 17 November between 11:30 and 2:45.

Raffle Items – Our raffles are always a great success. This year we are seeking donations for the following raffles:

Gardening – any gardening supplies (seeds, gloves, pots, tools)

Boys & Girls – any treats that boys & girls would like  (new toys, stationery, games, books, treats)

Christmas – any Christmas themed supplies. (Ornaments, foods, decorations, clothing etc)

Please do not feel you need to go out and spend heaps of money on these items. If everyone pitches in a little bit, we will be able to provide some really awesome raffles. Contributing to one raffle per family should be more than enough to create some very cool raffles.

All raffle items can be placed in the boxes provided at the school office.

Used Toy Stall – One of the very popular stalls is always the used toy stall. We are requesting donations of any used toys, puzzles, games etc. Please make sure that they have all of the parts and are in good condition. These can also be dropped off into the appropriate box at the office.

Bake Sale – There will also be a scrumptious bake sale. If you would like to donate one of your yummy slices, biscuits or cakes, please do so on the morning on Mission Day.

Aroha News

This week Constable Kelly came in to teach us about Road Safety. It was fantastic for our younger students to learn about what to do when our road patrollers are out, and also knowing how to keep ourselves safe when walking, biking & scootering on our footpaths

Aroha also enjoyed some tuakana/teina time last Friday as students in Aroha were interviewed for a special project Arahi are completing for the end of the year. It is so great to see the aroha and leadership shown from all tauira (students).

Ka Rawe kia koutou – Awesome work everyone!

Ako 1 News

Ako 1’s Visit to the Twits Production

On Friday 13th October, 78 excited children boarded the bus as it rolled away from the school. Ako 1 was off to watch the breathtaking Twit’s production at the Due Drop Centre in Auckland.

As Ako 1 turned up to the Due Drop centre all the year 3 and 4’s scrambled out of the bus. St Joseph’s school was very lucky to win  free tickets to the awesome Twits production.

When we got in the Due Drop centre the usher told us the rules and we all had a quick bite to eat. After a little snack we lined up in our rows, and walked through the twisting hallways to get to the theatre.

Mr and Mrs Twit were the most awful characters you ever did see. Mr Twit had a long ugly beard that always had leftover breakfast, lunch and dinner in it. Mrs Twit had a long cane, and before you feel sorry for her the cane was not for walking with, it was whacking little children with. She had one long eyebrow and loads of wicked scowls.

Ako 1 watched as the two Twits played nasty tricks on each other. Throughout the show there were songs that we could sing and dance along to, such as the ‘Mugglewump Jive” and the ‘Shrinky shrinky blues”

For many of the students the Twits production was the first time seeing a stage show. We all loved seeing the story come to life.

Ako 2 News

Ako 2 had a fabulous day of learning at Auckland Zoo last Friday. Special thank you to all of the parents who came and supervised a group for the day.

Arahi News

What a great start to the term. Today we have 24 students at the Year 7&8 touch tournament in Tuakau. What a stunning day for it. It is great to see so many students interested in sport and being active. We are well underway in our learning this term and very busy with the planning of exciting events. As mentioned in previous communication, if you would like to help with the Year 7 celebration, there will be a meeting on Wednesday 1 November. Year 8 parents wanting to help set-up for the graduation dinner, we will be in the hall from 12pm on Tuesday 12 December. As part of our rotations this term, the students are learning a liturgical dance. Check out their dance moves below.
