Tena Koutou Katoa Talofa Lava Kamusta Malo el lelei Mauri Hello Everyone
Thank you for attending our recent school-assisted Mass. It was lovely to see our school families there and I am sure you’d agree that our children’s involvement in the Mass made it a very special celebration for us all. Aways, a parishioner congratulates me on our efforts but I can assure you that it is our DRS, Mrs Gallagher-Pile and other staff that put it together, and we are blessed to have them.
Last week, we promoted Social Justice Week in our school. With a theme of “Say No To Racism – We Are One In Christ, our students were reminded to be just, kind, and fair to all. Arahi led our Monday assembly based on the story of The Good Samaritan and this reinforced the values we, as Christians, are called to live by.
Another highlight last week was the South Auckland Catholic Kāhui Ako Teacher Only Day on Friday. This day provided our staff an opportunity to work with their colleagues from other Catholic Schools and participate in workshops about Hauora, Creative Arts Therapy, Science of the Brain, Well-Being for Pasifika Learners and much more. All teachers came away from the day equipped with new strategies and refreshed ideas on learning, engagement and well-being.
This week we are celebrating our Pacific Island countries that reflect our children’s heritage. It has been great to see the pride that comes when the children wear their traditional dress and are greeted in their languages. We have displayed their flags each day. I know you will hear more about this further in this newsletter. Tomorrow all students are welcome to wear their own traditional dress to school – it is not a mufti day. Next week, we have several of our Pasifika students participating in our Franklin Pasifika Speech Competition. I’m sure their families are very proud of them, as we are.
A general reminder to parents and whānau: please model for your children using the pedestrian crossing safely. Seddon Street is becoming increasingly busy and dangerous and many families are running across the road without using the pedestrian crossing. This models unsafe behaviour to the younger children. We want to ensure that everyone, including our whānau, is safe arriving and leaving the school. Thank you for supporting us to keep your children safe.
Stay well and God bless.

“This woman of faith, Mary of Nazareth, the Mother of God, has been given to us a model of our pilgrimage of faith. From Mary we learn to surrender to God’s will in all things. From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary we learn to love Christ, her Son, and the Son of God. For Mary is not only the Mother of God, she is the Mother of the Church as well”
– Pope St John Paul II

We also opened the week with a lovely Singing assembly with performances from our choir led by Mrs GP. Tuesday saw us celebrating Kiribati. We had 4 local preschools join us for a very special performance from our Pasifika Performance group. On Wednesday we celebrated the Cook Islands and Fiji. Mrs Harrington shared some beautiful items from her pacific nations and students in Aroha enjoyed writing about them! We also had a yummy pasifika lunch, with Otai drink and Panikeke. On Thursday we celebrated Tonga with our beautiful families coming in to share their knowledge of Tongan cuisines. On Friday we look forward to finishing the week with our chop suey lunch. It will also be a Multicultural day where we will be celebrating all cultures! You are welcome to join us at 11:30am for our Pasifika Assembly in the hall where we will close the week with special performances from our Pasifika groups. FRUIT TREES
We have been fortunate to have had Mike Faulkner from Baker’s Delight deliver us 5 Fruit trees, on behalf of the “Franklin Says Thanks” group. We received 2 plum trees, 2 peach trees and an apple tree, and are training the apple tree and a plum tree to grow by espalier – teaching the branches to grow sideways from the Stem!
ROBO Gals On Thursday 1st September the Year 7 & 8 girls were fortunate to take part in a STEAM morning presented by students from University of Auckland Faculty of Engineering. This is the second year that they have come into the school. The purpose of the lesson was to empower more girls into choosing STEAM subjects at school and as possible future professions. During the lesson they learnt coding basics through Scratch (online) and how to apply this learned knowledge to a problem. The girls enjoyed themselves and we look forward to this continued relationship with the University to offer this programme again.
Arahi News In Arahi, we have had a great couple of weeks. Communion presented an assembly last Monday around our Social Justice Theme – Say No to Racism, We are One in Christ, specifically retelling the story of the Good Samaritan and the importance of looking after our neighbours. We have also been continuing to work hard in all subject areas. In particular, the tamariki have been conducting science experiments and preparing the science boards to present to our whānau on Tuesday 27 September at the open evening. They have also been writing scripts for their short movies, which will also be presented during the open evening. It has been a great term so far and it is hard to believe there are only three more weeks to go.
