Principal’s Message

Tena Koutou Katoa    Talofa Lava    Kamusta    Malo el lelei    Mauri    Hello Everyone

The beginning of the term is flying as we are already busy with “back to normal” events. The children are excited about competing in inter-school sports again and our recent orienteering results were very pleasing. We were delighted to hold our first full school assembly, for some time, in the hall. It was lovely to gather the children together again. Once again children can attend Friday Masses at the Church in their teams.

This week we have had several educators back in the school supporting our teaching and learning programmes. We have had both our DMIC/Inquiry Maths and HAL/Healthy Active Learning facilitators working alongside our teachers in class and leading staff meetings. We also have had facilitators from Cognition working with the school on literacy PLD. Tomorrow, several of our teachers are attending a PD/Professional Development Day about the introduction of our new NZ Religious Education curriculum. It will be exciting to see how this has been modified to meet the needs of our young Catholics today. We are also looking at Social Sciences/Aotearoa NZ Histories’ new curriculum so our teachers have lots of learning happening for themselves at this time.

Next Friday will be our Teacher Only Day (postponed from Term 1 due to Covid). An advisor from the Catholic Education Office will be taking us through an RE paper to further teacher knowledge supporting the catholic nature of our school. Each year, teachers in Catholic schools are expected to complete 12 hours of professional development supporting our personal growth and guidance when teaching our Catholic faith. I can assure you that this year we will easily meet this commitment.

You may have seen that I promoted sponsorship of student attendance dues through the parish bulletin. We were delighted to have some responses to that, which will now lessen the financial burden of a few of our school families who have faced financial hardship through these Covid years. We are so grateful to have such a supportive parish community. We also would like to wish Fr Robert a speedy recovery after his recent illness and look forward to seeing him back at school. Father usually visits us each week.

We welcomed parents back at school for some of our meetings after school hours. Thank you to those parents who attended Pasifika and Ako 2 camp meetings. We continue to ask adults not to enter classrooms during the school day when students are present.

Next week is Bully-Free NZ week and so we will be having a “pink” mufti day for our children on Wednesday. We will send out a reminder next week. Please read the community notice below reminding us to “Beat the Bugs” this winter. We recognise that we will need to be extra vigilant as we prepare for winter illnesses alongside Covid 19. Mask wearing, ventilation and good hygiene continue to be promoted in our school.

Wishing you and your family a lovely autumn weekend. Enjoy this weather while it lasts.

Stay safe and God bless.
Ngā mihi nui

We Are One with the Risen Christ

Lord we lift our hearts to you.

As the dawn breaks, may we carry the unity we share into every
moment knowing that we are one with the risen Christ. Lord,
we lift our eyes to you.

As the sunrises, may this moment stay with us, reminding us to
lookfor the beautiful colors of promise in your word. Lord, we lift
our prayers to you.

As the dew air falls, may we breathe this morning in and know that
like the earth, you sustain us, keep us and work within us always. And
so, we lift our voices to you.

We celebrate the greatest day in history, when Jesus rose from death,
defeated darkness and bathed the world in stunning resurrection light.
May we ever live to praise you!

Amen.

SchoolDocs: Policies and Procedures

https://stjosephspukekohe.schooldocs.co.nz/1893.htm

In Term Two, the focus continues to be on Health and Safety Management. Not all policies are reviewed by parents. This term parents are invited to comment on the following topics: Healthcare: Medicine, Managing Minor/Moderate Injury, Managing Serious Injury and illness, and Infectious Diseases.

Search for the policy (under the school emblem), click on the topic name link, read through the policy then click the red UNDER REVIEW flag (top right hand corner of the page) and submit your feedback. We consider all feedback given.

This term’s policies will be approved at our School Board Meeting on 22nd June.

Attendance Dues: Term 1 Attendance Dues should now have been paid.

It is now time to pay Term 2 Attendance Dues or the remainder of the year if you are able to do so.

Catholic Special Character contribution: This donation is used to fund the staff and service provided by the Catholic Education Services Board who are responsible, on behalf of the Proprietor, for safeguarding and strengthening the Catholic Special Character of our schools.

The contribution is $12.50  per term per student or $50 per student per year.  The contribution is tax deductible and a 33% refund can be claimed from the IRD.

Travelwise: Our Travelwise students started the term with a Speed Gun Campaign to gauge the speeds of cars passing our school in the morning. Due to the high speeds that they found, they have decided to continue this journey by holding a Slow Down Around our School Campaign.

School Events

Ārahi Learning: We have had a wonderful start to the term. The children have come back settled and ready to jump straight back into their learning. Some of the highlights so far have been success at orienteering, developing leadership skills of the sport leaders with the Play Club Programme, expanding our knowledge of working with fractions, learning how to write more sophisticated speeches,  beginning a new reading comprehension programme and most excitingly being back together as a school for assemblies and playtime. Our team newsletter will be sent out tomorrow with more information around our curriculum this term, key dates and general information.

Ako 2 Learning: It has been a fantastic start to the term in Ako 2 starting with our class Wānanga where we have re-established classroom routines and expectations for our best learning. We have enjoyed learning from many curriculum areas with a focus on fractions, travelwise programme, orienteering, and persuasive writing, to name a few. Here are a few snaps from our learning so far this term. We are looking forward to the many opportunities coming up for the students in Ako 2.

Year 5-6 Orienteering:Our teams did really well in Orienteering on Tuesday, a big congratulations to our Year 6 A boys team who came first. A huge congrats to Bru Muir who came first and is the fastest year 6 boy in Frankin for Orienteering, followed closely by Paul Chamberlain who came in 2nd overall. Very proud of you boys! Well done!
